Consistent Safety Practice is a Requirement, Not an Extra
Consistent Safety Practice is a Requirement, Not an Extra
The New Zealand Institute of Safety Management offers heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Murray Taylor, the driver of the excavator caught in the quarry collapse at Heathstock Haulage in North Canterbury yesterday, 8 June 2015.
We are disappointed to see the third such quarry accident this year, and call upon business and political leadership to ensure that all New Zealand workplaces employ pervasive and consistent safety practices.
Quarrying is one of many industries that offer tough and sometimes dangerous conditions. Failure to correctly analyse the risks and to consistently apply safety measures can lead to unnecessarily tragic outcomes.
Tony Rigg, National Manager for the NZ Institute of Safety Management, says “within businesses consistent safety practice is a requirement, not an extra, and needs to be part of the culture in every business”.
Health & Safety reforms are working their way through Parliament and NZISM welcomes them. However, today we have a stark reminder that leadership in all companies, regardless of size, is needed every day to reinforce them.
