NZMA supports 'Don't know? Don't drink' campaign

The New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) fully supports the Health Promotion Agency’s ‘Don’t Know? Don’t Drink’ campaign, which reminds young women that alcohol can harm developing babies.

“This campaign accords completely with one of the key recommendations in the NZMA’s recently published alcohol policy briefing,” says NZMA Chair Dr Stephen Child. “We recommend that women of childbearing age should receive advice on the harmful effects of drinking during pregnancy and those considering pregnancy should be advised against drinking any alcohol.

“Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a serious issue in New Zealand, and anything that can be done to combat this, should be done.

“We commend the HPA for the work it’s doing in this area, and recommend that health professionals check out the range of material available to help advise patients.”
