Dementia symposium focuses on the importance of community

“Remaining active and engaged in their community is achievable for all people with dementia, if that community is committed to supporting people with dementia to live well,” says Anne Schumacher, Chief Executive of Dementia Wellington.

Encouraging community involvement is the focus of a dementia symposium being held in Wellington tomorrow. Participants will hear from a range of speakers, the highlight being a panel discussion by people with with dementia as they talk about their experiences of living with the disease.

There will be presenters from DHBs, Ministry of Health, Office for Seniors, Bupa and Public Trust, and the topics covered will be both clinical (such as Palliative Care and Dementia by Professor Rod MacLeod, Palliative Care Medical Specialist at Hibiscus Hospice) and community-focused (such as Financial Vulnerability by speakers from Westpac).

Hosted by Dementia Wellington, Dementia New Zealand, and the New Zealand Dementia Cooperative, the Wellington Dementia Symposium is being held at Macs Function Centre on Thursday 3 May.
