New Zealand Medical Journal Saved After Liquidation Threat

I am pleased to announce the New Zealand Medical Journal (NZMJ) has been purchased by the Pasifika Medical Association Group (PMAG), they have ensured the principal scientific journal for the medical profession in New Zealand will keep publishing into the future, said NZMA Board Chair Dr Alistair Humphrey.

Like the New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA), the NZMJ began in the late 1800s; the first edition being published in September 1887. The NZMJ was one of the NZMA’s key assets, and its future was uncertain when the NZMA Board recommended liquidation in May 2022.

“After expressing condolences for the Association, members and staff, the number one question we’ve received since recommending liquidation has been “what will happen to the Journal?” The Journal means a lot to New Zealand doctors and medical professionals.

“I am grateful to PMAG Chair Dr Kiki Maoate (FRACS) and the staff at Pasifika Medical Association Group for taking up this important taonga.

“I am glad to see the Journal will keep publishing with editor Prof Frank Frizelle – Frank has been editing the Journal for more than two decades.

“The NZMA has a proud record of service to the New Zealand medical community and to the country as a whole since 1886, it’s great to see the NZMJ will continue this legacy even after NZMA is likely liquidated next week,” Alistair Humphrey said.

Official ownership of the NZMJ transfers on July 1, and NZMA members will take their final vote to confirm liquidation of the Association on July 4 2022.
