Revitalised Ora Toa Medical Centre Opens In Waitangirua, Strengthening Healthcare Access For The Porirua Community
Ora Toa Health Services—owned and guided by Ngāti Toa Rangatira—is proud to announce the opening of its newly refurbished Ora Toa Medical Centre in Waitangirua, Porirua. This reflects Ngāti Toa’s enduring commitment as mana whenua to care for all people within its rohe, and forms part of the wider iwi efforts to uplift community wellbeing across social, cultural, and educational spheres.
The revitalised medical centre has been designed to operate as a comprehensive health hub for Waitangirua, pulling services closer to the people and creating ‘at place’ pathways of care. With expanded clinical rooms, improved patient spaces, and greater capacity for community health programmes, the upgraded facility provides a welcoming environment where whānau can receive timely care that acknowledges and respects their cultural identity and lived experiences.
“As mana whenua, Ngāti Toa holds a deep responsibility to support the wellbeing of everyone who calls this region home,” said Helmut Modlik, Chief Executive Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira. “By investing in a modern and inviting facility in the heart of Waitangirua, we are removing barriers from access to care and creating a place where families feel comfortable, understood, and supported.”
Alongside healthcare, Ngāti Toa actively backs a range of local initiatives that strengthen community resilience—supporting programmes in education, youth development, sport, the arts, housing, and cultural revitalisation. This holistic approach reflects the iwi’s belief that thriving communities are built not only through accessible health services but through opportunities that nurture identity, connection, and social wellbeing.
The enhanced centre will offer a wide range of services, including general practice care, chronic disease management, women’s and family health, and outreach support. With more space and a better service flow it enables Ora Toa to expand its preventative and community-led health initiatives.
“Ora Toa has long worked across the Porirua community, and this redevelopment strengthens our ability to provide high-quality, affordable care that meets people where they are—physically, culturally, and emotionally,” Josaine Ngatai, Acting Director Health – Ora Toa. “For Ngāti Toa, improving accessibility is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about upholding our responsibilities as mana whenua and continuing to invest in the wellbeing and future of all communities in our rohe.”
