New Zealand Healthcare Chaplains Association Celebrates 60 Years Of Service
The New Zealand Healthcare Chaplains Association/ Te Whakaruruhau mō ngā Minita Hauora o Aotearoa (NZHCA), the longest-standing chaplaincy organisation in Aotearoa New Zealand, is celebrating 60 years of service supporting spiritual care in healthcare settings across the country.
Since 1966, NZHCA has supported healthcare chaplains who walk alongside patients, whānau, and healthcare staff during times of vulnerability, hope, and healing. Chaplains provide compassionate presence and spiritual support to people of all faiths, beliefs and none, contributing to holistic care within hospitals and other healthcare environments.
“This 60th anniversary marks a significant milestone for NZHCA and is an opportunity to honour the organisation’s shared history, to give thanks for those who have shaped its journey, and to look ahead with renewed vision for the future of spiritual care in healthcare,” says President Wyatt Butcher.
As part of this future focus, NZHCA has established a Memorandum of Understanding with Spiritual Care Australia, aimed at the strengthening of spiritual care services in both countries. Through this collaboration, NZHCA offers the only independent credentialling pathway for healthcare chaplains in New Zealand. Credentialling is an increasingly important focus evidencing that chaplain and spiritual care practitioner practice is both robust and professional.
As NZHCA celebrates this 60-year milestone, the association remains committed to supporting chaplains, strengthening professional standards, and advocating for the vital role of spiritual care in the healthcare system.
