Images and text by Robbie TitchenerIt is said, sit long enough at a street cafe in Paris and you'll see the world go by. Wellington's equivalent seems to be the Vector Round the Bays - a swarm of walkers and runners and wheelchairs and pushchairs and scooters working their way from the heart of the city to Kilbirnie.
The day itself started out pleasantly overcast - perfect conditions for a quick run for those aiming to beat the clock. Then, as the meanderers and walkers made their varying ways along Wellington's waterfront, the sun came out and the day became a perfect one to enjoy the company of friends and family and many, many strangers. Wandering around the bays, people took advantage of the pace to stop and take pictures of the Spirit of New Zealand which was sailing past. Others would wave to locals sitting on their front doorsteps or leaning on their balconies. They, in turn, would shout encouragement.
In a sign of the growing interest in the event, over 10000 people participated in one way or another. First man home was Rees Buck in a time just under 20 mins. (He probably then ran back into town to pick up his car.) First woman home (and 18th overall) was former World Mountain Running Champ Melissa Moon in about 23 mins. Also worthy of mention, my sister finished in 941st place in a time of 36 mins - well done sis. Two hours into the event, people were still taking their leisurely time completing the course. And why should they hurry - it was another perfect Wellington day.
