Progressive leader, Jim Anderton: Press Statement

Progressive leader Jim Anderton today released evidence that he says proves that the last National government considered raising the age of eligibility to National Superannuation to 75 years of age.

"When Don Brash's soul-mate Ruth Richardson was Finance Minister in 1991, the Treasury had the time and inclination to study raising National Superannuation to 75 years of age by April 2000.

"New Zealanders need to know that National speaks with many tongues before general elections.

"Before the 1990 election, National promised to abolish the surtax and not raise the age of eligibility to National Superannuation. By 1991, they had broken their solemn promise on the surtax and had commissioned research into raising the age of National Superannuation to 75 years," the Progressive leader said.

"If National wins the election in September next year, it will carry on the work that the Labour Progressive government has instructed Treasury to stop," the Jim Anderton said.
