Over a million people at risk in Darfur, Sudan
Progressive MP Matt Robson is urging members of the public to help as best they can a public appeal by Oxfam for funds to assist alleviate a man-made humanitarian disaster in the Darfur region of Western Sudan.
"What we are witnessing in Darfur is a crime against humanity. For months, the so-called government of Sudan has been guilty of not protecting its own innocent civilians from the open slaughter being committed by Sudanese murder gangs," the Progressive MP said.
"The lives of over a million people are at risk in Darfur. They have fled from the militias who have burnt their homes, destroyed their crops and stolen their livelihood. Now they are struggling to survive in refugee camps as best they can. Significant urgent aid is needed," Matt Robson said.
"The Labour Progressive government also has a role to play. I expect the coalition government to take whatever practical steps necessary to put pressure on the Sudanese government to come to its senses and allow humanitarian agencies the access to civilians that they need to do the work that the government of Sudan itself is neglecting to do," the Progressive MP said.
The public can call 0800 600 700 to donate to Oxfam’s Sudan emergency appeal.
