Progressive MP says liquor bans represent community action

Auckland-based Progressive MP, Matt Robson, says news that the Auckland City Council has introduced liquor bans in several suburbs represents a legitimate community response to tackle a serious social challenge.

The liquor bans are in accord with the harm minimization message of the Labour Progressive government's National Drug Policy.

"Communities have the right, and the responsibility, to take precautionary action to send a strong message that unacceptable social behaviour won't be tolerated and that action will be taken, if necessary, to try to best protect vulnerable young people from substances that they clearly can't handle responsibly," Matt Robson said.

"When you hear stories of young children being found drunk in public places, putting themselves at tremendous risk, then communities have to get serious about measures to try and keep our young safe," the Progressive MP said.

It was reported that the bans will begin in the shopping areas of Panmure, Avondale, Onehunga, Glen Innes, Otahuhu and Mission Bay on October 18. They will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Thursday to Saturday. No alcohol will be allowed in the Parnell and Newmarket shopping areas from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Wednesday to Saturday.
