Copeland Encouraged by Permanent Forest Sink Initiative

United Future Climate Change Spokesman Gordon Copeland has applauded the Permanent Forest Sink Initiative (PFSI) announced by the Government yesterday.

“I am extremely pleased with the Government’s announcement. United Future has worked hard under the Confidence and Supply Agreement to address issues concerning water quality and the planting of trees around waterways,” said Mr Copeland.

The PFSI allows landowners to get the economic value of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequestering it in the form of new forests. Under the Kyoto Protocol, this process generates forest sink credits, which can be sold on the international market.

“I applaud this initiative as it will encourage landowners to plant trees along streams and rivers. While creating an opportunity for further carbon sinks, the trees will also work to prevent the leaching of nitrates and the excursion of stock into rural waterways.”

“It will also be aesthetically pleasing and add to the beauty of rural New Zealand.”

“The environmental and economic benefits go hand-in-hand,” concluded Mr Copeland.
