United Future leader Peter Dunne today acknowledged the 90th anniversary of New Zealand’s involvement in the Battle of the Somme which saw 2000 New Zealanders killed and over 7000 injured.
“Ninety years on, it is important to remember the sacrifices of those involved and those left behind, and especially those New Zealanders who lost their lives in a war that had a profound influence on the identity and shape of our nation,” says Mr Dunne.
New Zealand soldiers entered the Battle of the Somme on 15 September 1916 after fighting in Egypt and Gallipoli during World War I.
“This is an opportunity both to remember the contributions made by soldiers of past generations, and also to recognise the ongoing work of our current military personnel who are working in all corners of the world as we speak,” says Mr Dunne.
