Copeland welcomes geothermal power station
United Future energy spokesperson, Gordon Copeland, today welcomed the news that Mighty River Power has commenced construction of its 90MW, $275 million geothermal power station in Kawerau.
"This is a significant step forward for renewable energy," said Mr Copeland.
"Mighty River Power is to be congratulated on its initiative in undertaking the initial exploration work and securing the necessary geothermal resources by working with the Crown, the Ngati Tüwharetoa Trust, Pütaiaki Trust and Norske Skog Tasman, not to mention the very complex RMA process involved.
"The new power station will reduce the need for fossil fuel based generation, thus enhancing both sustainability and contributing positively towards climate change."
