United Future signals support for ban on driving using cellphones

United Future will lend its support to Transport Minister Harry Duynhoven if he proceeds to ban drivers using handheld cellphones, said United Future Transport spokesperson Gordon Copeland today.

The dangers of using a cellphone while driving were rammed home last week with the death of teenager Sharleen Lloyd linked to using her cellphone while driving.

"I wholeheartedly support Minister Duynhoven in his efforts to improve
driver safety by banning drivers using handheld cellphones."

The difference between United Future and Minister Duynhoven's position is that the Minister would like to see a blanket ban on cellphone use by drivers whereas United Future supports the use of handsfree devices, important for marketers and those who travel in their work.

Last year 79 crashes - 7 that were fatal - were caused by distractions from cellphones.

"We hope to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities by clamping down on using driving while using cellphones."

"United Future supports the commonsense option to ban handheld cellphones but allow handsfree devices while driving, said Mr Copeland.
