Turner continues advocacy for kin raising kin
UnitedFuture family spokesperson Judy Turner today continued her campaign in Parliament to get fairer treatment for people who look after their own kin, such as grandparents raising their grandchildren.
She quizzed acting Social Development Minister Steve Maharey about the Cabinet paper “The Role of the State in Providing Assistance for Children who are cared for by Family Members who are not their Parents” and received an assurance that policy development was well underway and involved considerable consultation with affected groups.
Mrs Turner said later "It seems an awfully long time since Labour promised stressed and worn-out caregivers they would be treated the same as other caregivers.
"The children being raised by their grandparents are often not caring and well-behaved family members but traumatised and angry kids who require a huge amount of counselling and care – care that the State seems remarkably dilatory about providing."
