Dunne hails extended daylight saving

UnitedFuture leader Peter Dunne has hailed the start of daylight saving for 2007/2008.

“Daylight saving has come along a week earlier this year because of the efforts of Nelson city councillor Mark Holmes and myself who secured over 42,000 signatures on a petition earlier this year calling for longer summer daylight saving time,” he says.

Mr Dunne says that the extended daylight saving period which will run through until the beginning of April means New Zealand will now have 27 weeks of daylight saving a year, much closer to the international average.

“Extended summer hours will be good for families and households, and is also more energy efficient.

“It will give Kiwis much more time to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle our country is envied for, and I am very pleased the government responded so positively to our petition.

“Now all we need is a great long, hot summer,” he says.
