Speaker delivers Address–in–Reply speech to Governor–General

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Dr Lockwood Smith, is pictured sharing a moment with the Governor–General, the Hon Anand Satyanand, at Government House Vogel in Lower Hutt after delivering the Address in Reply on behalf of the House on Thursday ( February 19, 2009). The Governor-General said the Address in Reply gave due consideration to the speech from the Throne delivered at the opening of the 49th Parliament. The Address in Reply ceremony symbolised the expression of free speech and loyalty to the Crown, he said.
The Speaker was accompanied by the Serjeant-at-Arms, Clerk of the House, and Deputy Clerk. Members of the House in attendance included Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga and Melissa Lee who moved and seconded the motion for the Address in Reply following the Governor-General’s speech from the Throne. Other MPs at the ceremony were Hon Tariana Turia, Minister for Community and Voluntary Sector, Hon Ruth Dyson, and John Boscawen.
