Cross-Party Committee decision on Expenses
Speaker Of The House Of Representatives
The Hon Dr
Lockwood Smith
4 June 2009
A regime for public disclosure of expenses incurred by members of Parliament will be developed as quickly as possible, the Speaker of the House, the Hon Dr Lockwood Smith, said today.
This follows a cross-party meeting held late this afternoon to discuss the extent to which expenses incurred by MPs should be publicly disclosed. The meeting was convened by the Speaker.
“The committee was conscious of the public interest in this issue and agreed to develop a disclosure regime to release information about the expenses of members of Parliament paid through the Parliamentary Service,” Dr Smith said.
“Members of the cross-party committee will take the ideas discussed at today’s meeting back to their respective parties.”
