Parliamentarians to attend 126th IPU Assembly in Kampala, Uganda
A New Zealand parliamentary delegation led by Hon Tau Henare MP will attend the 126th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Kampala, Uganda, the Speaker, Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith, has announced.
Hon Tau Henare is the permanent delegate to the IPU for the 50th Parliament, and will be accompanied by Louisa Wall MP and Jan Logie MP.
The IPU is the world organisation of parliaments of sovereign states, and provides a focal point for dialogue among democratic parliaments. The Assembly brings together parliamentarians from democratic parliaments to discuss and collaborate on key global issues. Panel discussion themes in Kampala will include malnutrition in young children, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development, and the response to AIDS.
“Attendance at the IPU Assembly provides New Zealand with an opportunity to engage in a significant international organisation and to provide informal representation for smaller Pacific nations,” said Dr Smith.
The delegation will represent the New Zealand Parliament at the Assembly, which is taking place from 31 March to 5 April.
