DOC deep in the doldrums

The Department of Conservation will need more than just another restructuring in order to improve its performance, according to a damning “Workplace Engagement Survey” with only one in four staff believing that the organisation has a clear vision of where it’s going and how it’s going to get there, says Labour’s Conservation spokesperson Ruth Dyson.

“These survey results are a damning reflection on the lack of leadership shown by the Minister of Conservation in an area that is critical to the well-being of our environment and our international reputation. We have been let down by the Minister and the staff in the Department clearly feel let down as well.

“Only 27 per cent of staff have confidence in the senior leadership and fewer than 30 per cent think that DOC delivers on its promises.

“The much trumpeted restructuring of DOC has turned out to be an expensive disaster. DOC is now scrambling to repair the damage. But this survey shows that the problems go deep within the organisation.

“Just over half the staff feel a sense of belonging to DOC. And only one third say there is a common purpose, the same number who feel they are working for a successful organisation.

“Just one third feel that communication is open and honest and only 50 per cent think that co-operation is encouraged.

“The Minister needs to step up to the mark and show leadership and vision to a crucial Government department that is clearly floundering without it,“ says Ruth Dyson.
