National’s Tax Return Tax a cash grab
National is planning to overtax every New Zealander so they can ‘incentivise’ people to file their tax return, says Labour’s Revenue spokesperson Clayton Cosgrove.
“This is a tax grab pure and simple. Every New Zealander will be automatically charged a higher rate of tax each year. Only if they file their tax return will that tax be paid back.
“National’s Tax Return Tax would be completely laughable if it wasn’t a serious proposal by the IRD. It is even more incredible that Revenue Minister Todd McClay is proposing it gets brought in next year.
“Making filing a tax return compulsory is something we did away with 20 years ago. Deliberately overtaxing people is breaking new ground even for the IRD.
“Legislation is already in place to discourage people from cherry picking income tax returns. This comes into effect next year. The new proposals will waste taxpayers’ time by forcing them to file returns they don’t need to.
“Todd McClay must rule out the proposed Tax Return Tax immediately,” says Clayton Cosgrove.
