New Zealand MPs contribute to regional conference

Speaker of the House of Representatives

For immediate release – 19 NOVEMBER 2015

Dr Parmjeet Parmar MP and Peeni Henare MP will join with Members of Parliament from across Australia and the Pacific when the 21st Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Regional Conference takes place in Darwin, Australia from 24 – 26 November 2015.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon David Carter MP said that the Conference is an important forum for regional dialogue to effect positive democratic change.

“The CPA Regional Conference brings MPs from across Australia and the Pacific together to discuss issues of regional importance and to enhance parliamentary cooperation,” said the Speaker. “New Zealand is an active participant in the CPA and a strong supporter of Pacific parliaments. I am pleased that our members are able to contribute to discussions and seek solutions to issues facing the Pacific region by advancing a parliamentary dimension to these discussions”.

The Conference has an over-arching theme of vulnerability in the region and how legislators can best address this. Delegates will be exploring and learning from colleagues on diverse issues including the economy, parliamentary procedure and public engagement, political structures, refugees, climate change, and trans-national crime and law enforcement. Peeni Henare will present a paper on the potential vulnerability of regional tourism.

The delegation will take place 24 - 26 November 2015.
