Courage of Defence personnel not forgotten
Labour Defence spokesperson Phil Goff has paid tribute to the New Zealand Defence Force personnel awarded medals for gallantry.
“The soldiers who received decorations for gallantry in Afghanistan and South Sudan upheld the proud traditions of New Zealand soldiers in the courage and leadership they showed in combat. New Zealand can be proud of them and the service they have given to their country”, Phil Goff said.
“It is easy to forget that when people sign up to serve in the Defence Force they make a commitment to put themselves when necessary in harm’s way on behalf of their nation.
“I want to pay particular tribute to Lance Corporal Rory Malone, who died at Baghak after rescuing his company commander who was wounded early on in the ambush. Rory Malone’s family can be proud of the courage he showed in the battle in the tradition of his much respected great-great grandfather, Colonel William Malone, who died at Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli.
“We honour Rory’s sacrifice and bravery and pay tribute to all of those whose courage under fire has been recognised and honoured today,” Phil Goff said.
