Payroll disaster demands full inquiry

The escalating payroll scandal that threatens to effect a huge number of employees further exposes this Government’s basic management incompetence, Labour’s Economic Development spokesperson David Clark.

“This is a serious management issue from the Government. It has been in power for eight years but cannot guarantee people have been paid properly.

“This issue cannot be left to a panel appointed by MBIE. A full independent inquiry is needed so we know what happened and when.

“Other departments such as police appear to have addressed the problem. Questions must be asked about the ministerial oversight of departments that have not dealt with the issue.

“We know there are serious issues at Steven Joyce’s personal empire MBIE. It’s clear they picked a flawed payroll system when they merged departments. Now it appears the problems extend to other state agencies.

“It is highly questionable whether MBIE is the right agency to fix this situation when it has a number of issues to sort out itself. This must be fixed with the utmost urgency so working people can have confidence in their weekly pay packet,” says David Clark.
