Letele should have never been forced to beg
Māori Party co-leader Marama Fox is elated that Vicki Letele has been released from prison.
“I’m happy that Vicki can finally go home, that the efforts of her family, lawyers and officials have been rewarded with the Parole Board finally seeing sense.
“It’s disappointing however that her and her family had to be put through so much pain, that protests had to be held and that hundreds of letters had to be written before the Parole Board listened.
“I have no doubt when I compare Vicki’s situation to other cases that she was prejudiced because she’s a Māori.
“There is institutional racism in the justice system and we will continue to highlight that because as the late Martin Luther King said ‘there can be no peace without justice.’”
