Have Your Say on the Newborn Enrolment with General Practice Bill

Parliament’s Health Committee is seeking public submissions on the Newborn Enrolment with General Practice Bill.

The bill seeks to improve health and social results for infants and children. It proposes a requirement that newborns are enrolled with a general practice and primary health organisation before the newborn is due for his or her first immunisation at 6 weeks of age.

The bill would provide for a newborn’s responsible practitioner to:

• Consult with the newborn’s family about which general practice to nominate as the newborn’s primary healthcare provider;

• Send a pre-enrolment request on behalf of the newborn to the nominated practice; and

• Ensure the request in entered in the maternity system.
