Te Pāti Māori Announces Support For Second Local Council Candidate As Part Of “Growing Movement”

Te Pāti Māori has this morning announced that it will back a second candidate in this year’s local elections, further expanding its presence in regional and district politics.

Tuteri Rangihaeata (Ngāti Ruanui, Ngā Rauru, Ngāruahine) has been given the parties support as he puts his hand up to contend the first election of the Te Tai Tonga Māori Ward, established as part of South Taranaki District Council.

“Although a new journey for Tuteri, he brings a puna (spring) of knowledge and experience to his candidacy. He is an exceptional candidate who will make an excellent councillor,” said Wahine Vice President, Fallyn Flavell.

“Tuteri carries the values and aspirations that our movement has for our people. Addressing and meeting our needs and getting stuck in to create thriving whānau, iwi, and communities,” said Flavell.

List MP based in Te Tai Hauāuru and Co-leader, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said that “it takes a lot of sacrifice and hunger to put your hand up and contest these positions.”

“Tuteri is committed to improving the lay of the land for whānau, mokopuna and tamariki. He has done exceptional work in mātauranga Māori, has led in kura kaupapa and is a Māori business owner across numerous sectors.”

“He may best be known as Dalvanius Prime’s nephew, composer of Poi E. The song was composed to amplify the use of Te Reo Māori, and would be made into a documentary in 2016 off the back of Tuteri’s advocacy for its production.”

“I cannot wait to watch and support his campaign wherever I can. He is going to make a great representative,” said Ngarewa-Packer.

“Supporting candidates is not new for Te Pāti Māori, after last month announcing support for Toi Iti. It’s part of growing our movement, being present in spaces we haven’t been before and supporting candidates we know will advocate for the best interests of whānau,” said Flavell.
