Govt Must Release Med School Costings Quickly
Labour has questions about the Government’s decision to fund a new medical school at Waikato University.
“Treasury has raised concerns about this project. Decisions about the future of New Zealand’s medical workforce are critical and must be transparent. The Government needs to release the costings quickly,” Labour health spokesperson Ayesha Verrall said.
“It’s harder and more expensive to see a doctor than ever, and we need to be confident investments in medical training will deliver. It is not clear how this investment is better for New Zealand than the alternatives.
“I’m concerned, as many people are, about the doctor shortage we have in New Zealand, both in local clinics and overstretched hospitals. I look forward to scrutinising their numbers.
“This school was pitched to the National party as a “present” to them when in office. Decisions about the future of New Zealand’s medical workforce should be made on more robust grounds, that’s why we want to see the costings,” Ayesha Verrall said.
