The Green Party is proud to announce Kahu Carter as their candidate for Christchurch Central.

Kahu is going to be asking voters for two ticks, both the electorate vote for her and the party vote for the Green Party. Kahu is dedicated to continuing her hard work for the people of Christchurch Central, promising to be a steadfast community advocate.

“I am excited to be bringing truly progressive values to Christchurch Central, ” said Green Party candidate for Christchurch Central, Kahu Carter. “I will stand strong for a Christchurch Central that has warm housing for everyone, where everyone is taken care of, and where we look after the environment around us.”

Kahu is aiming to be the first Green Party electorate MP in Christchurch Central, after the success of the Green Party electorate campaigns in 2023 and 2020. Having entered parliament in 2023, Kahu has been a very effective Opposition MP, tirelessly advocating for people and planet in and outside the halls of power.

Working alongside constituents, she has advocated for care-affected people and children, including through the Green Party’s campaign and open letter, Seven promises to tamariki. Two of her members’ bills have been drawn, with the Copyright (Parody and Satire) Amendment Bill looking to have its first reading in the coming weeks.

“I advocate every day to improve the lives of people across Aotearoa, on a variety of issues. I love Christchurch. As a māma, this is where I’ve chosen to raise my kids. I want to represent this amazing community and fight for a future for everyone in the heart of this amazing city.“

“Christchurch Central has a strong, growing, diverse community, and it is in need of a strong voice in parliament to ensure that it can be somewhere that works - and is affordable - for everyone. We can see this beautiful Christchurch emerging, steeped in the whakapapa of our tangata whenua, our tagata moana, and the history here.”

“This November, Christchurch Central residents get to have their say on who will be the most effective advocate for their local issues, and I am delighted to be standing to be that advocate ”, says Kahu Carter.

Kahu Carter (Ngāti Maniapoto, Tainui) - she/her - is a first-term Green Party MP based in Christchurch Central. She holds the portfolios for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Children, Community and Voluntary Sector, Disability, Drug Law Reform, Mental Health, Rainbow Communities, Women, and Zero Waste. Her career before entering parliament spanned roles at Kohanga Reo, Para Kore and the Ministry for the Environment.

Notes:

  • Green Party electorate candidates are selected using a grassroots democratic process. This involves reaching a decision by consensus in their local branch.
  • The Green Party list will be published in 2026. Placement on the list is the outcome of a nationwide process whereby every party member has an opportunity to rank candidates.
