Government-Backed Major Events Economic Boost For Wellington

The Government is backing a strong calendar of major events that will boost Wellington’s economy, support local jobs, and bring more visitors into the capital, says Wellington-based List MP Nicola Willis.
As part of the $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package, Wellington will host a series of high-impact events between June and October 2026, designed to attract domestic and international visitors and drive spending across the city.
These include continued support for some of Wellington’s most popular fixtures — the World of Wearable Art Show, Beervana 2026, and the Lōemis Festival. It will also feature a new international chef collaboration as part of the already high-demand Visa Wellington On a Plate.
“Major events play a critical role in Wellington’s hospitality and tourism sectors. They fill hotels, bring customers through the doors of cafés, bars and restaurants, boosting our local economy by creating jobs and lifting incomes.”
“The economic impact is clear. For every dollar spent on live performance, around $3.20 flows back into the wider community, with live event spending contributing approximately 1.4 per cent of New Zealand’s GDP.
“Supporting major events is part of our Government’s wider focus to back economic growth, attract visitors, and ensure Wellington continues to thrive as New Zealand’s cultural and creative heart.”
