Rainbow Labour Sector Council Announces Chairs

Dated Friday 15 December 2000

RAINBOW LABOUR SECTOR COUNCIL ANNOUNCES CHAIRS

The Rainbow Labour Sector Council confirmed the appointment of their two co chairs on Tuesday 12th December 2000 during a nationwide phone conference. Judie Alison, Auckland and Robert Watson, Christchurch will lead the group for the next twelve months. Both are long time Labour Party members. Secretary for the group is Michael Wilson and Treasurer is Serge Sablyak. Sub Committees were approved in the area of Law Reform, Health, Education and Media Relations.

The Sector Council was formed earlier this year to represent gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (“GLBT”) interests in the Labour Party and is the latest addition to the Labour Party’s sector council structure. Sector Councils represent various interest groups and have input into Labour Party policy development within the Party. Other Sector groups include the Women’s Council, and Young Labour.

“The Rainbow Sector Council was established in response to demand from gay and lesbian Labour Party members” said Judie Alison, co-Chair. “The Council aims to continue developing our visibility, to support and work with MPs Chris Carter, Tim Barnett, and Georgina Beyer to address the gaps in New Zealand's human rights laws and policies regarding the rights and needs of the GLBT communities, advise the Labour Party on GLBT issues and generally work towards the re-election of a Labour –led government”, she said.

For further details please contact Judie Alison 021 298-0927 or Robert Watson 021 253-8471.
