Ethnic Federation Welcomes RRO Appointment

New Zealand Federation Of Ethnic Councils Inc.

The New Zealand Federation of Ethnic Councils (NZFEC) welcomes today's appointment of Gregory Fortuin as new Race Relations Conciliator. While limited to one year the appointment of a person with Mr Fortuin's standing, background and experience reflects the importance given to race relations in a country with an increasingly diverse society.

Federation President Mr Weng Kei Chen emphasises that the organisation would like to see the RRO maintain its independent office outside the HR Commission as this would make it more accessible and allow it to promote harmonious ethnic relations through education, not only conflict resolution relating to human rights issues. Mr Chen acknowledged the constructive work achieved by parted Conciliator Dr Rajen Prasad who was farewelled at the Federation's recent National Conference in Auckland, jointly convened with the RRO. The organisation is looking forward to a continued productive working relationship with the Race Relations Office under its new leadership.
