ALRANZ: The Plucking of the Christian Right
"I must confess that I find Graham Capill's latest outburst linking safe and legal abortion procedures with mass slaughter of newborn chicks to be somewhat bizarre." said Craig Young, ALRANZ Research Officer as he commented on the latest CHP media release.
"However, let us be very clear about one thing. Science is not on the side of the anti-abortionists. It is science that tells us that the embryo and foetus acquire functional human organs gradually and viability can only occur when the necessary respiratory development is in place, at the twenty-third week of pregnancy or so. Most terminations are performed between the ninth to twelfth weeks in New Zealand."
"It is science that tells us women do not experience widespread negative psychological consequences from abortion."
"And as for Capill's claims about the anti-abortion movement, one must remember the SPUC-Right to Life New Zealand split in December 1999 and the closure of New Zealand's Humanity anti-abortion newspaper in February this year. I agree, New Zealanders would do well to be concerned with vital issues in our country- which is why the anti-abortion movement is dying." Mr Young concluded.
