Acting Chief Executive - Department Of Internal Affairs

The State Services Commissioner, Michael Wintringham, announced today that Katrina Bach, who is currently a Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development, will be the acting chief executive of the Department of Internal Affairs and the acting Secretary for Internal Affairs. Ms Bach will take up the acting role on 1 October when the current chief executive at Internal Affairs, Peter Hughes, takes up his appointment as the chief executive of the Ministry of Social Development.

Ms Bach is currently the Deputy Secretary with responsibility for corporate services at the Ministry of Economic Development. She has responsibility for 90 people in that role.

Previously Ms Bach was the director of resources policy, in the then Ministry of Commerce, with overall responsibility for policy advice to Ministers on natural resources, environment, and matters relating to local government. Last year she was seconded to the office of the Minister for Economic Development, Hon Jim Anderton, to assist the Government to establish the new portfolio of economic development.

Ms Bach has worked at Treasury, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and in the Department of Trade and Industry. She has been a public servant for 18 years. She graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Masters degree.

Mr Wintringham said Ms Bach would be the acting chief executive at Internal Affairs until a permanent chief executive is appointed. Mr Wintringham said he hoped to announce a permanent appointment by Christmas.
