Two hundred and fifty workers locked out by their employer are preparing for a weekend of picketing.
American-owned multinational GeneralCable is refusing to let its workers in the gates of its Riccarton plant for rejecting a two per cent pay offer.
The workers are seeking four per cent, in line with what is being paid by others in the industry.
Their union negotiator, EPMU national industrial manager Bernard McIlhone, says the workers are in good heart.
“They’d like to get back to work, but they’re not going to fold,” he said.
“This take-it-or-leave style of industrial relations is a thing of the past in New Zealand and it’s time GeneralCable realised that.”
