Democrat Leader stands aside at Democrat Conf.

12 October 2002

Media statement from Grant Gillon

Democrat Leader stands aside at Democrat Conference

The Democrats at their Annual Conference have decided not to apply for membership, as a party, of the Progressives: 34 votes to 25.

Following this I decided not to stand for the another term as leader of the Democrats and will instead continue to be involved with the Progressives.

Even though there was no challenger for the position of leader at the Conference this weekend, I decided I could not put my name forward while it was likely that the Democrats were going to stay outside the Progressives.

I cannot support a decision which I do not believe is in the best interests of the Democrat movement.

Nominations for the leadership of the Democrats will open tomorrow and I wish whoever takes over the role of Leader the best of luck.
