TLN Thrilled about WTO Milk Classes Decision
In welcoming the WTO Milk Classes decision the TLN notes that just as important as the $70 million boon for dairy farmers is the precedent the WTO decision sets for any regulator contemplating a similar scheme.
“This decision imposes a very real discipline on the use of export subsidies. In effect it protects millions of dollars worth of future earnings by making a clear statement about the use of this sort of trade distorting mechanism,” said Executive Director, Suse Reynolds.
Reynolds was also delighted to be on the same side as the Greens.
“Export subsidies, as well
as being trade distorting, also put unnecessary pressure on
the environment by encouraging over production. The WTO’s
decision shows that environmental concerns are not at odds
with trading interests,” said Reynolds
