Minister statement ‘Not Good Enough”

CCS says “Not good enough” in response to Minister Trevor Mallard and Education Ministry CEO Howard Fancy’s announcement of an initiative to get more young people active in sport and recreation.

CCS is a national disability support organisation working each year with thousands of disabled New Zealanders and their families, and its President, Mr Lyall Thurston, said that the Minister’s statement was silent on the disability issue.

“There are many many young disabled people seeking a chance to participate in sport and recreation, but the current level of resources means that many are denied the opportunity.”

“Given the Government’s stated commitment to the development of young people and to the disability community of New Zealand, the Minister’s statement is not good enough, and we call upon the Government to urgently make available sufficient additional resources to ensure that every young disabled person has the opportunity to enjoy sport and recreation.

Mr Thurston said that CCS would welcome the opportunity to work with the Minister to address the resource issues, and that this should happen as soon as possible because many young disabled people and their families do not feel they are getting a fair go.

“We wholly support the Ministers intentions, and want to make sure that it can realistically be applied to all young people”.
