Consultation Opens Doors for Körero about Te Reo

Te Puni Kökiri Chief Executive Leith Comer said consultation on the Mäori Language Strategy will open doors for Maori communities to share their thoughts about the future of the Mäori language, and the roles of Government and Mäori in that future.

“Te Puni Kökiri staff have undertaken significant background work to support the revision of the Mäori Language Strategy. We have had hui with Mäori broadcasting and education organisations, with general Mäori organisations and officials from government agencies like Te Mängai Päho and Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Mäori. It is also important, however, to confirm the direction with grassroots opinions.”

Mr Comer said the Mäori language is no longer at risk but it is important that efforts to revitalize the language are coordinated. He said it is important to see the consultation round as one important part of Te Puni Kökiri’s Mäori language work programme.

“The Survey on the Health of the Mäori language provides a good base for Mäori language planners. Two regional reports, for Te Taihauäuru and Te Waipounamu, have already been released and other regional reports are in production.”

Mr. Comer encouraged as many people as possible to make submissions about the consultation document He Reo E Körerotia Ana – He Reo Ka Ora. Submissions must be received by 14 April 2003.

14 regional hui will be held around the country over the next few weeks for people who would like to comment kanohi-ki-te-kanohi. Alternatively the document can be viewed on the Mäori Language Strategy webpage www.tpk.govt.nz and feedback made to mls@tpk.govt.nz.
