You Have The Right To Shoplift
Libertarianz spokesman Stephen Berry was left spitting tacks today, after witnessing a shoplifter exercising her 'rights' at the store he works in. "This women was clearly a professional criminal," said Berry, "who knows exactly how to tweak the system. Legitimate business owners are at the mercy of laws that allow thieving scum to go about their illegitimate occupations with ease."
That afternoon, staff were surprised to see a rather bold woman walking out of the store carrying premium beauty products in her hands and with suspicious bulges in her pockets. Staff spoken to by Berry said that they had asked her for proof of purchase and requested that she return to the store. The woman refused and continued to walk out of company premises. Staff followed her and continued to ask her to come back to the store, but there was little else that could be done. "There is nothing we can do. We can't touch her," one staff member said. There was little point in calling police as the woman had no car - i.e. for identifying her with registration plates - and it was highly unlikely the police would arrive in time to do anything productive about it.
Berry says, "The situation in regards to theft is absolutely disgusting. Business owners cannot even take steps to apprehend thieves for fear of assault charges, and if the shoplifter is not willing to co-operate then they are free to go on their way." He reflects, "In a country where our politicians legislate theft on a routine basis, perhaps we should not be surprised that it is so difficult to keep merchandise safe from five-finger discounters." To remind our lawmakers, Berry concluded, "The Government has a duty to allow business owners greater leeway when defending their property, and also to allow them to equip themselves with the means to do it."
