Representations Of The 1913 General Strike

James Taylor IV: Representations Of The 1913 General Strike

Historian James Taylor will be appearing on The Porritt Show on MUNT FM 88.5 between 8-9pm discussing the Representations of the 1913 General Strike.

James is a keynote speaker at the Trade Union History Project’s seminar on the 1913 General strike. James graduated from VUW in 2001 with BA Honours in History and Sociology and is currently working part time and finishing a Masters of New Zealand Studies degree at the Stout Research Centre at VUW. This year he has assisted with research for Stephenson Percy Smith's memoirs.

The Trade Union History Project (TUHP) was formed in 1987 by trade unionists and working people interested in history, together with several academics to document the history of trade unions and working people in New Zealand. They are now entering our sixteenth successful year of existence, sustained by the voluntary contributions of keen enthusiasts, and by continuing financial contributions from members, unions and other organisations.

Information on the seminar this weekend can be obtained from Hilary McGreachy at hilarymcg@hotmail.com

Themes discussed in James’ interview will be centred around the General Strike itself, the key players such as the United Federation Of Labour and revolutionary strike action versus Arbitration, Massey’s Cossacks, the fall out and the parallels with today’s union movement.

Previous guests on The Porritt Show have included Strategic and Defence commentator Dr Dave Dickens, Bruce Hubbard (arrested for sending protest emails to the US embassy) and Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendegast.
