2003/2004 holiday road deaths fewest in 38 years

The 2003/2004 holiday period has ended with a provisional figure of 12 road deaths, down from 17 last year and the lowest figure for a holiday period since 1966/67, when nine people were killed. The deadliest holiday period on record was 1972/73, when 37 were killed.

The official 2003/04 holiday period began at 1600 on Wednesday 24 December and ended at 0600 today (5 January). This year's holiday period spanned 11.6 days, compared to 9.6 days last year.
