for immediate release

GE Free Activists were prevented from entering an Invercargill supermarket on Friday the 13th of February after supermarket management were tipped off about an impending GE Food labelling exercise.

The group planned to draw shoppers attention to the existence of unlabeled genetically engineered organisms in food. They were armed with GE warning stickers, posters and information on GE food.

The activists were stopped at the front door of Countdown on Tay St by supermarket staff who were waiting for them.

Meanwhile, other GE food labelling activity was carried out undetected in the city.

“The supermarkets are running scared. They don’t want people to know what foods contain GE ingredients, because most people obviously would prefer not to eat it.” Said Community Action Southland coordinator Jo Watson. "We’re trying to give shoppers access to vital information regarding dangerous products in their food. While this particular action was blocked, similar actions around the country have been great successes." said Watson

Watson believes that the informer was a local newspaper reporter, who breached confidentiality.
