Alliance says throw out Project Aqua - and get electricity back under public control

The Alliance Party opposes Project Aqua on the Waitaki River.

Alliance President Jill Ovens says growing local concerns about the proposed hydroelectric scheme have turned the issue into a national one.

"The true national interest for all our people must lie in developing proven, reliable, sustainable sources of power which do not require the destruction of irreplaceable physical and cultural assets such as the Waitaki Valley," says Ms Ovens.

The Alliance is urging the Government to ensure full and transparent democratic processes in decision-making on Project Aqua, and says the outcome must not be influenced by financial inducements offered by Meridian.

The Alliance says electricity should be brought back under public control for the public benefit.

"We need a rational approach to planning for future power needs that incorporates conservation measures and alternative energy sources," says Ms Ovens.

"New Zealanders are sick of having decisions made for them behind the closed doors of corporate boardrooms. The Labour Government must listen to the voices of local people who are strongly rejecting Project Aqua."
