April 20 is pot head's highlight
April 20 is the highlight of the pot head's calendar, with the term "420" being synonymous with smoking marijuana.
"4:20 is not only a time, it has become a term used by the cannabis community to covertly - or not so covertly - refer to the act of smoking marijuana," said spokesperson Chris Fowlie.
"The term is said to have come from US highway patrol code for 'marijuana smoking in progress', and has been enthusiastically adopted by pot heads around the world who 'stop, drop and roll' at 4:20 pm or am.
"Today being the 20th day of the 4th month is International 4:20 Day, which not surprisingly calls for celebration on a large scale.
"So at today at 4:20, if you are of like mind spark a torch of freedom where ever you are and know that you are together with millions of people around the world."
NORML also reminds law reform supporters that May Day - Saturday 1 May - is J Day!
International J Day goes off in more than 200 cities around the world, including Auckland, Napier, Levin, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
