Young Nats support amendment to Marriage Act

"Eighteen and 19-year-olds should have the right to be able to commit to marriage without parental consent," says New Zealand Young Nationals Chairman, Jamie Simpson.

The New Zealand Young Nationals believe that 18 and 19-year-olds are old enough to be able to make the choice as to whether they get married or not, just like 20 and 21-year-olds are legally entitled to do.

"If 18 and 19-year-olds can legally vote, purchase alcohol, go to war, have consensual sex, and leave home, why then can they not choose to marry?" asks Mr Simpson.

The Young Nationals highlight the idea that society recognises a young person's ability to make these important choices, and they feel it makes sense to allow them to marry as well.

"Parents should be responsible for their sons and daughters until the age of 18. Once people reach this age they should be able to make decisions for themselves," says Mr Simpson.
