Queen's Aunty Alice Dies

HRH Princess Alice, Duchess Of Gloucester (25 December 1901 - 29 October 2004)

Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, died peacefully in her sleep, at Kensington Palace, London, late in the evening of 29 October 2004. Her immediate family were present.

Princess Alice was the widow of the late Henry, Duke of Gloucester, third son of King George V; the mother of the present Duke of Gloucester; and the aunt of The Queen. After her marriage to the Duke of Gloucester in 1935, Princess Alice supported the work of King George VI and then The Queen over many years throughout war and peace.

Passing away two months short of her 103rd birthday, she had a long, adventurous and eventful life. In her Royal duties, she served the Commonwealth for many decades, working for the benefit of numerous charities and supporting the Armed Forces in peace and war. Princess Alice's granddaughter, Lady Davina, recently married New Zealander Gary Lewis at Kensington Palace.

The Queen was reported to be greatly saddened by the death of her aunt.

Details of funeral arrangements will be announced shortly. Those who wish to send a message of condolence to the Royal Family may do so through the online condolence book on the Buckingham Palace website.
