To mark the Fairtrade Fortnight (7th - 21st May) this year, second generation coffee farmer Guillermo Vargas Leiton from Costa Rica will be speaking on campus about how Fair Trade benefits small scale producers in developing countries.
Developed as an alternative to conventional trade, Fair Trade ensures that marginalised producers get a fair deal by paying them a fair price for their goods; ensuring safe working conditions; developing producers' independence; and encouraging sustainability through better environmental practices (biodynamic and organic farming). Come and meet Guillermo and find out how Fair Trade benefits his community and what you can do to help.
He will be speaking this Friday, 20th May along with Barry Coates, executive director of Oxfam NZ at the following locations:
