Progressive New Lynn Candidate To Campaign For Party Votes

The Progressive Party has selected businessman Mohammad Kazemi Yazdi as its candidate to campaign for party votes in the New Lynn electorate in this year's general election.

"Progressive candidates are campaigning for people's party vote this year as your pro-economic development and anti-drugs insurance policy," deputy leader Hon. Matt Robson MP said today.

"Born into the minority Persian community in Iraq, a community which felt its full share of the brutal oppression at the hands of then U.S.-backed Saddam Hussein regime in the 1980s, Mr. Yazdi is a living example of how to rise above hardship to successfully build a successful life for your family and to the benefit of the whole community.

"If you support increased investment in higher education, favour the economic development of our regions and want politicians to take leadership on youth binge drinking and other youth drug abuse problems, then Mr. Yazdi's message is put New Zealand first and Party Vote Progressive," Matt Robson said.

The Progressive Party is a partner in the coalition government first elected in 1999. Its leader, Jim Anderton, is the third-ranked Cabinet Minister with responsibility for Industry and Regional Development and driving the Ministerial Committee on Drug Policy. Matt Robson's Sale of Liquor (Youth Alcohol Harm Reduction) Amendment Bill, which proposes new regulations on liquor advertising and to raise the minimum alcohol purchasing age to twenty, will be considered by Parliament on June 8.
