Discussions With Government Progressing Well

Confidential discussions involving the forestry industry, Forestry Minister Jim Anderton, MAF and the Ministry for the Environment are progressing well in efforts to resolve issues highlighted by the recent billion-dollar Kyoto Protocol reversal, the Kyoto Forestry Association (KFA) said today.

“Forestry Minister Jim Anderton and other Ministers are to be commended for their willingness to engage positively with the industry and for their encouragingly pragmatic approach to issues and problems that have been well canvassed,” KFA Spokesman Roger Dickie said.

The industry-side of the discussions is being led by the New Zealand Forest Owners Association (NZFOA), which Mr Dickie said was consulting regularly with other key forestry groups and which enjoyed the confidence of the industry.

The details of the discussions are covered by Chatham House and “no surprises” rules but Mr Dickie said sufficient progress had been made in the last two weeks that KFA was suspending this week’s announcement of the first stage of its $2 million public awareness campaign pending further progress over the next seven days.

Mr Dickie will not be commenting further until next week at the earliest.
